DESCRIPTION
Cutting is the practice of making scratches or cuts on your body with a sharp object. The cutter applies enough pressure to cut the skin and make it bleed - it’s a type of self-injury or SI for short. Most cutters begin in their young teens and sometimes the practice continues to adulthood. The cutting may occur on wrists, arms, legs or bellies.

Understanding why Teenagers Cutting Themselves is difficult. For some, it’s a coping mechanism that helps them cope with strong feelings. Pressure to perform in school or relationship problems can all cause feelings that are difficult for adolescents to deal with. Other teens cut to feel relief from bad feelings. There are many reasons teens may cut themselves.

Cutting can lead to more dangerous behaviors. Instead of a small scratch or slice, sometimes the impulse can lead the cutter to make larger, deeper cuts to continue feeling the relief. If this happens, they can hurt themselves permanently, though not usually on purpose. If the depth of a cut is misjudged, it can require stitches or even hospitalization depending on the location. Infection is another concern.

While it’s not always easy to identify a teenager that cuts themselves since the scars are easy to hide, if you suspect your child is cutting, it’s best to simply ask them and open the lines of communication. The first step is always the hardest. After that, a good therapist or doctor can work with the teen to identify the reason for the cutting and to help them work through their emotions or problems to eliminate the triggers that caused the behavior.
